Solange Knowles, photo by Rafael Rios
Hey, friends. I was working on some pretty cool secret things last month and now they’re out in the world! I want to make sure you know about them in case any of it is your jam—hence, this email.
So, first, why is there a picture of Solange at the top of this email? You’re asking all of the right questions. Solange is the 2022 Guest Curator for WePresent and she chose me to write stories about four artists she’s excited about right now. I had amazing conversations with Jacolby Satterwhite, Dozie Kanu, Autumn Knight, and Elliott Jerome to find out about their work and lives, and now you can read all about them over on WePresent.
King Pleasure
I also wrote another, unrelated story for WePresent on Jean-Michel Basquiat. His family recently opened the “King Pleasure” exhibition in New York, and I spoke to the artist’s sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux last month to hear about their memories of their brother and to talk through some of their family pictures.
Pre-order my book Women’s Work, please and thank you
I received an early copy of my upcoming book Women’s Work and I’m jazzed. We can all be jazzed together when it comes out this June if you make sure to pre-order your copy. Let’s be in this together, you guys.
Please remember that I’m giving away a handmade quilt to one of you beautiful folks who pre-order the book! Send proof of your purchase to womensworkquilt@gmail.com to enter, and I’ll randomly select a winner on publication day in June. The competition is only available to UK residents for boring legal reasons—sorry!
